Is Electroconvulsive Therapy Right For You?

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), has been used for more than 100 years as a means of helping those with various types of mental illnesses. The idea of this type of treatment is that by providing the brain with electrical currents, it can create small controlled seizures. This procedure is promoted as a means of changing the chemistry of the brain. It is often only used after other methods of treatment haven’t been successful.

Due to liability issues, though, and the fact that most insurance providers won’t cover the cost of this type of therapy, it is important to look very carefully at it. Before considering this type of treatment a person needs to evaluate the pros and cons of it. They also need to explore the cost of it and find a credible provider. This is something that will be offered be a specialist and not your regular family doctor.

Some individuals prefer Electroconvulsive Therapy though overtaking daily medications for mental health concerns. This type of treatment can also be offered to women who are pregnant or nursing. Most of the time if they fall into one of those two categories then it isn’t safe for them to take antidepressant medication.
