Are Anxiolytics Right For You?

An anxiolytic (also known as an anti-panic or antianxiety agent) is a chemical drug prescribed for the treatment of symptoms of anxiety. Anxiolytics are sometimes referred to as minor tranquilizers (although the term is now less known in modern texts) and are divided into two groups of medication: benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines.

We are not going to review each drug that is part of this category, but the category in general. While several types of Anxiolytics are known and used around the world, the way in which each one works is very different. Therefore, a doctor has to evaluate a patient to accurately assess one’s condition and his or her need for treatment.

There are quite a few different companies that produce and sell these types of medications. They go by various names–including both the brand-name and the generic forms.

Anxiolytics are only offered with a prescription. It is typically only recommended after all other forms of medication and therapy have proven to be unsuccessful for a patient who suffers from high levels of anxiety.
